Excavator dimensions are relative to the specifications of its boom and bucket. Normally, a long boom and a large bucket will require a big cab for the rotating platform. Measurements can range from small to gigantic.

Earth-moving equipment manufacturer, Caterpillar, has a mini-excavator that weighs 3,792 pounds (1,720 kilograms) with the cab. The 301.6C small excavator runs on a 19 horsepower Mitsubishi L3E NA Diesel engine that allows a maximum travel speed of 4.5 kilometers per hour (2.8 miles per hour) and a maximum digging depth of 6.8 feet (2080 millimeters). The machine has a swing speed of 10.5 RPM. The boom swings left (without stop) to 90 degrees, 54 degrees (with stop), and right to 50 degrees. Its 38.6 inch (980 mm.) wide blade has a height of 8.9 inches (225 mm.), a lift height of 7.1 inches (180 mm.), and a dig depth of 9.1 inches (230 mm.). The excavator dimensions could fit in different work tools such as the augers, buckets, hydraulic hammers, and vibratory compactors.

US company Bucyrus developed one of the largest små och stora företag excavators today. The excavator dimensions of RH400 are 44 feet 5 inches (13,540 mm.) x 29 feet 9 inches (9,070 mm.) x 32 feet 9 inches (9,990 mm.). The gargantuan machine has an operating weight of 2,160,510 pounds (979,990 kg.).The SAE J 1995 engine delivers an output of 4,500 horsepower (3,360 kilowatts). The excavator dimensions can hold up a standard bucket capacity of 52 cubic meters or a bucket payload of 90 tonnes. The RH400 has a maximum swing speed of 4.0 rpm. It has a maximum digging height of 66 feet 3 inches (20.2 m.), a maximum digging reach of 62 feet 4 inches (19.0 m.), and a maximum digging depth of 7 feet 7 inches (2.3 m.). The farthest height it can reach for dumping is 47 feet 7 inches (14.5 m.). The maximum speed reached with these excavator dimensions is 2.2 kilometers per hour (1.37 miles per hour).

Japan’s Hyundai designed R800LC-7A, a crawler excavator to fit medium-scale mining operations. The 181,480 pound (82.320 kg.) machine runs on a Cummins QSX15 that delivers a gross output of 517 horsepower (380 kW). It has a bucket capacity of 3.40 to 5.10 cubic meters (SAE heaped), a maximum digging depth of 8.750 mm., and maximum dumping height of 7.770 mm.

Excavator dimensions should always be considered along with the scale of surface mining operations. Large open-pit mining operations could be efficiently completed with relatively large excavators.
